Hidden from view at ground level, the best rooftops in Tangier offer a whole new perspective of the city. After navigating the maze-like streets of the medina and the bustling avenues of the new city, it’s easy to forget that the “pearl of the strait” was built around its port. The deep blue of the sea is only visible from the cornices or the long Malabata Beach. But whenever the city feels overwhelming, just head upwards. Nearly every home in Tangier has turned its roof into a terrace—perfect for lounging or adding a living space. The riads and dars that welcome visitors serve breakfast or tea on these serene rooftops, where life unfolds from these peaceful heights. And like the great artists who once found inspiration here, you too can take in the blue sky and the ocean.

Dar Nour

If we had to crown one rooftop terrace in Tangier, Dar Nour would be wearing the tiara. This elegant guest house is perched right on the Kasbah wall, and it comes with spectacular views over the Strait of Gibraltar—the kind that make you stop mid-sentence and just stare. The building is all about viewpoints: most suites extend into a private outdoor corner, there’s a breezy open-air lounge tucked behind a reed screen, and then there’s the grand finale up top. The main terrace is framed by crenellated walls and delivers a full 360° panorama of Tangier, from rooftops to sea and everything in between.
Palais Zahia

Wander the medina long enough and you might stumble upon Palais Zahia, a discreet little gem hiding in plain sight. The hotel occupies a former bank that opened in 1907, and it looks straight onto Place du Petit Socco, so you’ll know you’re in the right spot when you see the doorman in traditional Berber dress with a bright red fez. The third (and top) floor has been turned into a café—perfect for escaping the medina’s buzz for a moment and settling into a seat with a direct view of the port.
Rooftop of the Hôtel Riad Nord-Pinus

The rooftop at Hôtel Riad Nord-Pinus has one of those views that makes you feel like you’ve sailed into Tangier rather than walked there. Anchored right into the outer ramparts of the medina, the hotel overlooks the port and the deep blue sea like the prow of a ship. On a clear day, you can even spot Spain hovering on the horizon—close enough to tease, far enough to keep the mystery.
Salon Bleu

Perched near the ramparts, Salon Bleu quickly becomes the kind of place we “accidentally” return to multiple times. This café-restaurant has two rooftop terraces, and both are prime for people-watching as the crowds stream under the Bab Al Bahr gate. The climb itself is part of the charm: you go up the old wooden staircase of Dar El Kasbah and land in a rooftop that feels unmistakably Tangier—repained in electric blue, lined with deep pallet benches, and made for slow mint tea moments. Bonus detail for history lovers: Dar El Kasbah lives inside the old Telegraphs building, which somehow makes your tea taste a bit more interesting.
Cafe Hafa

Opened in 1921, Café Hafa isn’t just famous—it’s practically a Tangier legend with a sea view. Roofs, rooms, gardens… everything here has been turned into terraces, thanks to the fisherman who founded the place and clearly understood priorities. You sit facing the ocean with the corniche at your feet, in the same spot where Saint-Exupéry, Jean Genet, Jack Kerouac, and even the Beatles once stared at the horizon and pretended they weren’t thinking deep thoughts. Order mint tea, watch the water, and see what ideas turn up.
Lux Mall

If you want a view that feels a little different from “Kasbah rooftops and medina maze,” make a detour to Lux Mall. Yes, it’s a shopping center (with around forty luxury ready-to-wear boutiques), but the real reason we’re here is the big, uncrowded terrace that opens onto the new city and Grand Socco. From up here you get front-row seats to the minaret of the Mohammed V Mosque—and if you time it right, you’ll catch the muezzin’s call to prayer drifting across the city like a soundtrack.
La Terrasse

La Terrasse at the Hilton Tangier City Center isn’t just for business travelers hiding behind sleek glass and conference schedules. Locals and visitors come too—because the hotel put its terrace on the 13th floor, and Tangier looks excellent from that height. You get sea on one side, city on the other, and a view that genuinely earns the word “breathtaking.” Come at sunset, when the place turns into a hotspot and ordering a cocktail feels less like a choice and more like an obvious next step.
Detroit Palace

The first magic trick of Le Detroit Palace is how well it hides. It’s tucked into a tunnel-like passage in the Kasbah, where weathered stones and an ancient entrance suddenly open into a breathtaking palace. Today it’s a luxurious venue for weddings and big celebrations, with grand rooms gazing out over the historic city below. Even if you’re not planning a ceremony, you should absolutely climb up to the terrace—because nowhere else in the Kasbah gives you a veranda the size of a dance floor with a 360-degree view. It’s made for golden-hour photos and dramatic “main character” moments.
La Terrasse De Dar El Kasbah

Just a short stroll from the Kasbah’s southeast gate, La Terrasse De Dar El Kasbah sits inside the historic 1884 telegraph building—once the hub of the first English telegraph line connecting Tangier to Gibraltar. The best part? The original wooden staircase still carries you up to the rooftop, where potted plants, cozy tables, and lounge sofas create an easy escape above the noise. It’s bohemian, eclectic, and very hard to leave once you’ve sat down. Add in a diverse menu—from sizzling wok dishes to fresh natural juices—and you’ve got one of Tangier’s best hideaways.
La Boqueria

La Boqueria is the kind of place that pulls you in before you’ve even decided you’re hungry. Think grand arched entrances, glass walls, and a mood that feels slightly dreamlike in the Tangier light. The city reflects in the glass-paneled doors, and you get a stunning view over the Strait of Gibraltar and Tangier Bay. Yes, you can come for a classic mint tea—but the real reason to linger is the Spanish-leaning menu, a delicious little reminder that Tangier has always been a city with one foot on each continent.
Cafe Panorama

From almost every table, Cafe Panorama does exactly what the name promises: breathtaking views over Tangier’s modern port and the beaches stretching along the coast. Come in the daytime for that bright waterfront shimmer, or swing by at night when Avenue Mohammed VI sparkles with lights. The menu is famously enormous—18 pages—so whether you want a traditional Moroccan breakfast, a creamy risotto for dinner, or a parfait for dessert, you’ll find something that matches your mood (and your level of hunger).
