The Tangier Souks: A Shopper’s Paradise

The Souk of Tangier is a shopper’s dream, and for that reason, one of the very first stops for tourists arriving in the city. Those who enjoy the non-stop hustle and bustle of Moroccan shop life are in luck, because Tangier has not one, but two souks: the Grand Souk and the Petit Souk.

Together, these two markets form the main shopping area of the old city and are among the most frequented spots by locals and tourists alike. People come for the vibrant stalls and diverse products, but also for the atmosphere—the bustling alleys, the artisans proudly displaying their creations, from carpets and ceramics to shoes and lamps.

The Grand Souk (Grand Socco) acts as the main gateway to the Medina. It sits on the central April 9, 1947 Square, the border between the old and new city. The Petit Souk (Petit Socco), meanwhile, is the other big commercial zone in the Medina and is also the title of one of the most famous works by renowned Moroccan writer Mohamed Choukri.

As the name suggests, the Petit Souk is smaller in size, but full of charm. Nestled inside the Medina and ringed with small cafés, it’s known especially for its leather goods—bags, wallets, coin purses, and traditional shoes. The best time to visit is early in the morning, when the place is most lively and colorful.

What Can You Buy at the Souk?

You’ll find no shortage of handcrafted and traditional items to take home during your stay. Here’s a quick rundown of what to look for at Tangier’s big market:
