Travel writing based on first-hand experience

Ayia Napa arrives with a reputation louder than a beach club speaker, but stay with us: this corner of Cyprus is not just neon shots and questionable dance-floor decisions. Yes, the nightlife is famous. Yes, Ayia Napa Square can absolutely steal your evening and return it at 3 a.m. wearing sunglasses. But the real magic? It is in the turquoise coves, sea caves, lazy harbour lunches, monastery courtyards, and Cape Greco cliffs.

This Ayia Napa itinerary is for travellers who want the whole thing: beach time without becoming furniture, sightseeing without turning the trip into homework, and evenings that can be as calm or chaotic as you choose. If you have one day, or more in Ayia Napa, we will help you piece together the best beaches, viewpoints, restaurants, and nightlife stops.

Use this guide as a flexible route rather than a military operation. Start with the classics like Nissi Beach, Cape Greco, the Sea Caves, and Ayia Napa Harbour, then add in traditional taverns, sunset drinks, or a proper night out around the square.

Planning More Around Ayia Napa?

Ayia Napa is dangerously good at turning a simple itinerary into a full-blown “wait, should we add one more beach?” situation. We start with Nissi Beach, then suddenly we’re adding Cape Greco, sea caves, Protaras, brunch, boat trips, and sunset drinks like our calendar has infinite stamina. Use these guides to keep building your eastern Cyprus trip without letting the turquoise water boss you around.

  • What to Do in Ayia Napa — the best next click if you want beaches, caves, viewpoints, boat trips, family stops, and classic Ayia Napa highlights.
  • Best Brunch in Ayia Napa — perfect for lazy mornings, recovery coffee, big plates, and pretending breakfast is a strategic travel decision.
  • Best Things to Do in Protaras — ideal for adding Fig Tree Bay, Cape Greco, calm beaches, coastal walks, and easy day trips nearby.
  • Things to Do in Protaras with Kids — useful if your itinerary includes small humans, shallow beaches, boat rides, snack breaks, and low-drama sunny days.
  • Hidden Gems in Cyprus — for secret-ish chapels, caves, quiet viewpoints, villages, and detours beyond the obvious beach circuit.
  • What to Do in Cyprus with Kids — handy if you want broader family-friendly ideas across the island, from beaches and museums to nature stops.
  • Cyprus Road Trip Itinerary — great if Ayia Napa is one stop on a bigger driving route with coastlines, villages, ruins, and mountain detours.
  • 7-Day Cyprus Itinerary — the big-picture guide for fitting Ayia Napa into a full week with Nicosia, Limassol, Paphos, Protaras, and the Troodos Mountains.
  • Best Bars in Cyprus — useful if your itinerary needs sunset drinks, beach bars, and one civilized cocktail that may become three.

Getting Around Ayia Napa

Ayia Napa is fairly easy to navigate, which is excellent news because nobody wants a transport crisis between breakfast, beach, and “just one drink” in the square. The town centre, harbour, restaurants, cafés, and nightlife areas are walkable, especially if you stay near Ayia Napa Square or the seafront.

For the beaches, things depend on where you are heading. Nissi Beach is close enough for a long walk from the centre, but in summer heat we would happily surrender our pride and take a bus or taxi. Makronissos Beach and WaterWorld are farther west, so public buses, taxis, or a rental car make more sense.

  • Walking: best for Ayia Napa Square, the harbour, the monastery, restaurants, and nightlife.
  • Local buses: useful for Nissi Beach, Makronissos, WaterWorld, Cape Greco, and nearby Protaras.
  • Taxis: easy for short hops at night, but agree on the price or check the meter before setting off.
  • Rental car: worth it if you want to explore Cape Greco, sea caves, Protaras, or more of eastern Cyprus.
  • Bike or scooter: handy for confident riders, but summer traffic and heat are not exactly gentle.

Our tip: stay central if nightlife matters, stay near Nissi Beach if beach days matter, and rent a car only if you plan to explore beyond Ayia Napa. Otherwise, walking, buses, and the occasional taxi will do the job nicely.

1 Day Ayia Napa itinerary

8:00 │ Start Early at Ayia Napa Harbor

If you are one of those heroic morning people who can function before coffee, start the day with a gentle stroll around Ayia Napa Harbor. This is when the sun is still behaving itself, the light is soft, and the sea does that glittery postcard thing we all pretend not to be impressed by.

You may also catch the fishermen returning with their morning haul after being out since dawn. It is a lovely little slice of local life, far away from the louder side of Ayia Napa.

Before you leave the harbor, visit the charming Agios Georgios Church, stop by the open-air theater, where events take place throughout the year, and look out for the two symbolic sculptures: the Fisherman and the Mermaid. Together, they give a small nod to Ayia Napa’s deep connection with the sea.

9:00 │ Coffee with a Sea View

After your harbor walk, grab a table at one of the cafés nearby. Order something cold and refreshing, stare dramatically at the sea, and plan the rest of your day like the organized traveler you may or may not actually be.

Our best pick: Molos Seaside. It’s more of a beach café / relaxed seaside bar than a pure “coffee nerd” café, but that is exactly why it works in Ayia Napa: sea view, breezy setting, drinks, food, and that “we came for one coffee and somehow stayed until sunset” energy.

10:00 │ Visit the Thalassa “SEA” Museum

Ready for a bit of culture before the beach completely takes over your brain? Head to the Thalassa “SEA” Museum, one of Ayia Napa’s best indoor stops.

The highlight here is the replica of the ancient Greek merchant ship “Keryneia II”, which takes you straight into Cyprus’s long relationship with the sea. The museum covers around 7,000 years of maritime history, from the Neolithic period to Venetian rule.

You will also find fossils, some up to 100 million years old, along with mummified marine animals and sea organisms. Basically, it is part museum, part time machine, part reminder that the sea has been doing interesting things long before we started taking beach selfies.

11:00 │ Beach Time, Finally

Now it is time to dive in. Ayia Napa is famous for its beaches, and many of them have been awarded the Blue Flag, an international quality label given to beaches with clean water, good facilities, and well-managed services.

From peaceful Agia Thekla to dreamy Konnos Bay, the coastline is full of sandy coves, turquoise water, and safe swimming spots. Some beaches are perfect for lazy floating. Others are better for snorkeling, swimming, or pretending you are in a luxury travel advert.

For a different view of the coast, book a boat trip with friends or family. The sea caves, bays, and rocky cliffs are even more impressive from the water.

14:00 │ Lunch Break by the Sea

By midday, we pause. Not because we are weak, but because lunch is sacred.

Choose a traditional tavern in town or a seaside restaurant if you are not ready to separate from that view. Ayia Napa has plenty of places serving classic Cypriot dishes, fresh seafood, grilled meats, meze, and more modern Mediterranean plates.

For lunch in Ayia Napa, I’d choose based on what you want more: proper traditional Cypriot food or sea views.

Best traditional tavern in town: Taverna Napa est. 1976

This is probably the strongest “let’s eat like humans, not beach-club mannequins” choice. It’s a long-running Cypriot tavern in Ayia Napa, and recent Tripadvisor reviews repeatedly praise the traditional Cypriot food, especially the tasting/menu-style experience. One reviewer even calls it the best Cypriot tavern they visited in Ayia Napa.

Go for: meze, grilled meats, halloumi, dips, proper Cypriot comfort food.
Best for: a real tavern lunch in town, especially if you care more about food than the view.
Vibe: traditional, hearty, unfussy.

Best seaside lunch pick: Fish House Restaurant

For the “we want lunch by the water, please and thank you” option, I’d pick Fish House Restaurant near the harbour. Reviews mention beautiful views, a friendly atmosphere, very generous portions, and fresh seafood, with octopus and seafood especially praised.

Go for: seafood, grilled fish, octopus, fish meze.
Best for: lunch with harbour views and a proper seaside feeling.
Vibe: casual, fresh, relaxed.

16:00 │ Another Beach or a Nature Trail

After lunch, head to a different beach from the one you visited in the morning. Find an umbrella, claim your patch of shade, and let the sea breeze do its thing.

But Ayia Napa is not only about beaches. You are also right next to some gorgeous nature, so if you still have energy, try one of the area’s walking trails.

A lovely route starts around Konnos Bay, passing through lush greenery and scenic viewpoints before reaching the pretty Agioi Anargyroi Chapel. It is gentle, beautiful, and just active enough to make you feel smug afterward.

19:45 │ Sunset at Cape Greco

Sunset is when Ayia Napa gets properly dramatic. Head to the top of Cape Greco, where the sky opens wide, the sea turns golden, and the sun slowly drops toward the horizon.

Yes, it is popular. Yes, it is worth it. Some clichés exist for a reason.

21:00 │ Cocktails and Ayia Napa Nightlife

End the day with a cocktail in one of Ayia Napa’s many bars. You can keep it relaxed at an atmospheric beach bar or head into the famous Ayia Napa Square if you want something livelier. Our top nigtlife spots:

1. The Square Bar — best first stop

This is the easiest place to begin. It is right in the heart of town, has live music, cocktails, beer, and a lively but not totally chaotic atmosphere. Best for: live music, cocktails, groups, first drink of the night.
Go when: you want atmosphere without diving straight into full club mayhem.

Our 5 Best Hotel Picks for Every Budget in Ayia Napa

Ayia Napa is not exactly shy. One minute we are looking at turquoise water and pretending to be refined beach people; the next, we are choosing between a calm adults-only escape, a family resort with enough pools to lose a small army, or a budget apartment where the money saved can be nobly reinvested in halloumi. Priorities.

The good news? Ayia Napa has a surprisingly strong hotel scene, from polished luxury resorts near Nissi Beach to simple, well-reviewed stays close to the centre. Here are five of the best-reviewed hotel picks across different budgets and travel styles.

This is the kind of hotel we choose when we want Ayia Napa’s beaches and restaurants, but not necessarily someone shouting over dance music outside the balcony at 3 a.m. A radical concept, we know.

  • Why book it: adults-only concept, polished design, strong couples appeal
  • Watch out for: not ideal for families, obviously
  • Price: from $273 /night
