Getting Around Doha

We land, blink twice, and suddenly everything is shiny, wide, and air-conditioned. That’s Doha for you. Getting around here is refreshingly painless—as long as you know which button to press, which app to download, and when to absolutely not walk outside (hint: noon).

Here’s how we move around Doha without melting, overpaying, or losing our minds—and how you can too.

Doha Metro: fast, cold, glorious

If cities handed out medals for public transport, Doha’s metro would be quietly polishing its gold.

  • Clean, modern, punctual (and aggressively air-conditioned)
  • Three main lines—Red, Gold, Green—cover most tourist hotspots
  • Stations are spotless and clearly signed in English

Where it shines:
Airport → Corniche → Msheireb → Katara → Education City
Basically, all the places you’re actually going.

Tickets:
Grab a Travel Card at any station. Cheap, easy, no drama.

Reality check: Some hotels and residential areas still need a taxi connection—but the metro gets you impressively close.

Uber & Careem: our default move

We’ll say it plainly: ridesharing is king in Doha.

  • Uber and Careem are everywhere
  • Prices are reasonable
  • Cars arrive fast (often suspiciously fast)

This is what we use for:

  • Hotel → restaurant hops
  • Late-night returns
  • Anywhere the metro doesn’t quite reach

No cash needed. No awkward conversations. Just AC and quiet contemplation of the skyline.

Karwa Taxis: the local classi

You’ll see the turquoise Karwa taxis everywhere—and yes, they’re legit.

  • Metered
  • Regulated
  • Available at malls, hotels, airport ranks

Perfect backup if your phone dies or your app refuses to cooperate.

Renting a car: only if you must

Doha is built for driving, but traffic can be… enthusiastic.

We’d only rent a car if:

  • You’re heading outside the city (desert, beaches, Zekreet)
  • You’re staying long-term
  • You enjoy roundabouts as a lifestyle choice

Parking is generally easy, fuel is cheap, but honestly? For short stays, Uber wins.

Walking: choose your moments wisely

Yes, Doha looks walkable. And in winter, parts of it are.

Best for strolling:

  • Corniche (sunset = chef’s kiss)
  • Katara Cultural Village
  • Msheireb Downtown Doha

Best avoided:
Midday walking, summer months, distances that look short on Google Maps but are actually heat traps.

Airport transfers: smooth from minute one

Hamad International Airport is connected directly to the Red Line metro, but most travelers opt for:

  • Uber
  • Hotel pickup

Either way, you’ll be downtown faster than your luggage carousel finishes spinning.
