Mar Mikhael: A Neighborhood That Never Sleeps

Mar Mikhael Beirut

Everyone—expats, tourists, and locals alike—knows about the legendary nightlife of Mar Mikhael. With its bars, pubs, clubs, restaurants, and snack spots, Armenia Street is packed with people every evening. The glowing neon signs and the lively music from various venues create an electric atmosphere, drawing visitors at all hours of the night.

But by day, the neighborhood takes on a completely different charm, just as captivating as its nightlife.

Starting the Day Right: Coffee & Breakfast

Mar Mikhael Beirut

No day should ever start on an empty stomach—that’s a golden rule! First stop: a coffee at Mr. T.

Tucked away on a side street parallel to Armenia Street, near Geitawi’s Lebanese Hospital, Mr. T serves some of the best coffee in Beirut, along with heavenly cookies. The ambiance is friendly and cozy, and Tony, the owner, is always in a great mood.

If you’re looking for a more traditional Lebanese breakfast, Riwaq is just a few meters away. Their breakfast spread includes labneh, zaatar (thyme), jibneh (cheese), tea, and fresh vegetables—a perfect way to fuel up for the day.

A Walk Through History & Architecture

Mar Mikhael Beirut

After breakfast, it’s time for a stroll. Mar Mikhael, with its pre-war buildings, colorful old houses, and countless churches, is a paradise for explorers. Beyond the main street, hidden alleys reveal a nostalgic charm.

It’s impossible to walk through Mar Mikhael without remembering the devastating Beirut port explosion of August 4, 2020, which severely impacted the area. But despite the scars, the neighborhood has bounced back, full of resilience and life.

Lunch at Tawlet: A Culinary Experience

Mar Mikhael Beirut

For lunch, a stop at Tawlet is a must.

Run by Souk El Tayeb, this farm-to-table concept promotes sustainable agriculture and supports local farmers, cooks, and producers. Every day, from noon to 4 PM, the restaurant serves a different regional Lebanese dish, offering a taste of Lebanon’s culinary diversity.

If you’re already a Tawlet fan and want to try something new, we also highly recommend Le Chef—a beloved Beirut institution serving delicious, home-style Lebanese food.
