MARRAKECH WITH THE FAMILY: ORGANIZING YOUR TRIP

Where to Stay in Marrakech with Kids

Riad Anya & SPA
Riad Anya & SPA

For a comfortable family stay, renting a villa or riad can offer more space and charm than a hotel—often at a similar cost.

  • Medina: Stay in a traditional riad for an authentic experience, but be prepared for the city’s lively atmosphere, which might be overwhelming for kids.
  • Palmeraie & Hivernage: These areas offer peace and space, ideal for families seeking a quieter retreat, though they are further from the main attractions.

Choose the area that best suits your family’s needs and travel style!

Here are some recommendations for families in the Marrakech medina:

  • Riad Anya & Spa : Located in the heart of the medina, this riad is a little gem. You’ll be a 10-minute walk from the souks and Jamaâ El Fna Square. It features a pool on the patio and a hot tub on the terrace. The family suites are spacious and comfortable. I love the decor, which blends Moroccan and contemporary styles. It’s a true oasis in the middle of the medina.
  • Riad NayaNour : This riad is a good compromise since it’s located in a quieter area, at the gateway to the Medina. The setting and decor are stunning, and it has a beautiful pool.

Getting around Marrakech with kids

Marrakech

Marrakech is best explored on foot! With young children, don’t forget a stroller and baby carrier. Be careful with your little ones, especially in the souks and the medina: motorcycles/mopeds sometimes zip through the crowds at high speed. A baby carrier is recommended in the medina, as the sidewalks are often uneven!

To get to the city center from the airport or to get to more remote places like the Palmeraie or the Majorelle Gardens, you can use taxis. Choose the beige taxis that have a meter and insist on turning it on or negotiate the fare before leaving.

WHAT TO DO IN MARRAKECH WITH KIDS?

Play a game of hide and seek in the alleys of the Medina

Marrakech medina

The first thing to do in Marrakech with your family is to wander through the maze of narrow streets of the Medina. It’s a veritable labyrinth where colors, smells and sounds mingle in a whirlwind of life. Many treasures are hidden there; you’ll find all kinds of shops, palaces, and numerous riads. There are bustling streets, but also deserted ones. Don’t hesitate to get lost; you’ll always end up finding a main street.

Attend the folklore of Jemaa el Fna Square

Jemaa el Fna Square

Next, head to the famous Jemaa el Fna Square. Its folklore will delight both young and old. You’ll encounter water carriers in traditional costumes, henna tattoo artists, monkeys, and snake charmers! There’s no doubt this spectacle will have a special effect on the kids!

After dark, you’ll find many street food stalls here. You can enjoy simple and delicious traditional Moroccan food in a festive atmosphere! It’s a great place to spend a fun evening in Marrakech with your family.

Take a camel ride in the Palmeraie

a camel ride in the Palmeraie

The Oasis Palmeraie is another great family-friendly visit to Marrakech! It’s a large natural area covered in palm trees, where the must-do activity for children is camel riding. It costs less than €20 → more info here. With older children, a quad bike ride in the Palmeraie can also be a fun option. The 2-hour quad bike ride & camel riding in Palmeraie costs €49 (from 16 years old) → more info here.

Admire the architecture of the Bahia Palace

The Bahia Palace

Children will love visiting the ancient palaces of Marrakech! Filled with mystery, these palaces will remind you of the tales of the Arabian Nights. The Bahia Palace is certainly one of the most beautiful! It is a true masterpiece that can be visited in part. You can wander through certain rooms, but also through beautiful courtyards, patios, and gardens. Children will be able to discover Islamic art, including mosaic work, calligraphy, marquetry, stucco, and more.

Alternative: El Badi Palace is also a pleasant place to visit, even though it is less well preserved. Today, there are still impressive ochre walls and a few pools to see.

Stroll through the Majorelle Gardens

The Majorelle Garden

The Majorelle Garden is my favorite place in Marrakech! It’s a real breath of fresh air! It’s a perfect family visit to Marrakech to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. The walk among the 300 species of plants (cacti, yuccas, water lilies, jasmines, palm trees, bamboo, bougainvillea, etc.), ponds, and fountains is very pleasant. The café in the Majorelle Garden is also a great place for lunch or a snack with the family.

It can get very crowded, depending on the time of year you visit. I recommend purchasing your tickets on the official website a few days before your visit. It’s best to visit early in the morning.

Alternative: If you’ve already visited the Majorelle Gardens, check out the Secret Garden. It’s smaller, but also a pleasant place.

Fly over Marrakech with the family in a hot air balloon

hot air balloon flight in Marrakech

If you’re looking for an extraordinary experience in Marrakech with your family, I recommend a hot air balloon ride. It’s an incredible activity that will leave a lasting impression on the whole family! Flying over the desert near Marrakech and the Atlas Mountains is magical! The flight lasts about 1 hour and costs €195. It’s an expensive activity, especially for families, but I recommend it if you have the budget! Children can participate if they are over 4 years old.

→  Book your hot air balloon flight.

Stock up on souvenirs in the souks

souk of Marrakech

Don’t forget to take a little trip to the souks of Marrakech. It’s a joyful bazaar and the perfect place to find souvenirs to bring back for the whole family! Pottery, jewelry, Berber rugs, lanterns, slippers, tagines, and a thousand other wonders are hidden in these crowded stalls! It’s also the perfect time to teach children the basics of bargaining. If you’re interested, there are guided tours of the souks .

Swing Like Tarzan: Climbing and Treetop Adventures for Families in Marrakech

Are your kids natural climbers with dreams of scaling new heights? Marrakech offers exciting opportunities for adventure lovers of all ages, whether in an indoor climbing gym or high up in the treetops of the Atlas Mountains.

Indoor Climbing at Atlas Elevation

Atlas Elevation

Located just five minutes from the city center, inside the Al Mazar shopping center, Atlas Elevation is Morocco’s first climbing gym, designed to international standards. With a friendly and professional team, it provides a safe and structured introduction to climbing for children as young as five years old. Whether you’re an experienced climber or a complete beginner, this is a great place to challenge yourself in a secure indoor environment.

Treetop Adventures at Terres d’Amanar

Terres d’Amanar
Terres d’Amanar

For a more immersive outdoor experience, take a 45-minute drive into the High Atlas Mountains, where Terres d’Amanar offers an unforgettable treetop adventure course.

  • Treetop circuits for young adventurers (from 3 years old)
  • Aerial park and thrilling obstacles (from 12 years old)
  • North Africa’s longest zipline (430 meters!), soaring over a dramatic canyon

Your kids will love swinging through the trees, crossing suspension bridges, and soaring high above breathtaking landscapes, making them feel like true explorers in the heart of nature.

Spend an evening in the desert worthy of a tale from the Arabian Nights

Agafay desert

To spend an unforgettable evening with your family, I recommend going to dinner in the Agafay desert near Marrakech. Nomadic camps with huge tents are set up in the middle of the dunes. You can first observe the magical spectacle of the sunset. Once night falls, the tents will light up with a thousand lights and you will dine on a typical meal while attending traditional shows. It’s a great time to spend in Marrakech with your family!

Book your evening in the Agafay desert.

If you have the opportunity, I recommend spending the night there. There are some amazing glamping camps. I particularly recommend the Oxygen Lodge. It’s isolated from the other camps and therefore quieter.

Visit the old Koranic school Medersa Ben Youssef

Medersa Ben Youssef

The former Koranic school, Medersa Ben Youssef, is another interesting family-friendly visit to Marrakech. It’s located in the heart of the Medina. Here, too, you can admire a fine example of Arab-Andalusian architecture! The courtyard, prayer room, and patio are particularly worth a visit! The floors, ceilings, basements, and columns are all richly decorated. Young and old alike will be amazed!

Have fun at Oasira Water Park

 Oasira Water Park

Finally, for some family fun, you can spend the day at Oasiria Park. An aquatic paradise: 5 large pools, a wave pool, water courses, water games… all in the middle of large green gardens. It’s an ideal place to cool off during your stay in Marrakech with your family, while also pleasing the children!

Other things to do in Marrakech with kids

Anima Garden
Anima Garden

I’ve shared the 10 must-see spots in Marrakech for families with children, but the city offers countless other exciting activities to enjoy together.

Here are some additional ideas :

  • Visit the Museum of Confluences (Dar El Bacha) : Located in a magnificent 20th-century palace, the Museum of Confluences is an ideal place to introduce children to Moroccan art and history. There’s a very nice café in the museum: Bacha Coffee,it’s a busy place, but it’s worth stopping for a snack with the kids!
  • Take a pottery class: there’s nothing like a creative activity to keep young busy! In Marrakech, several workshops offer family pottery classes. You’ll learn traditional Moroccan techniques, such as hand-modeling or throwing, and leave with your own terracotta creations. Kids will love getting their hands dirty with clay and letting their imaginations run wild. It costs €39
  • Visit the Anima Garden: Located about 30 minutes from Marrakech, the Anima Garden is an artistic garden that will delight the whole family. Created by artist André Heller, this enchanting garden combines contemporary sculptures, colorful artwork, and exotic plants. Children will have fun searching for the works hidden among the trees.
  • Ouzoud Waterfalls: For an unforgettable day in the great outdoors, head to the famous Ouzoud Waterfalls, located about 2.5 hours from Marrakech. Standing over 100 meters high, these spectacular waterfalls offer an ideal setting for a family adventure. You can take an easy hike to the base of the waterfalls, observe the monkeys, and take a boat ride to get up close. If you don’t have a rental car, you can book a tour to visit them for around twenty euros. At this price, you shouldn’t miss out!

Visiting Marrakech with family: practical information

When to go to Marrakech with your family?

Marrakech in the spring

The best times to visit Marrakech with your family are spring and autumn. You’ll have sunny and warm weather, but not as hot as in summer! If you’re with children, I wouldn’t recommend June, July, or August because of the extreme heat. Winters can be quite cool. It’s still perfectly possible to visit the city, but you might not be able to go swimming.

How long to visit Marrakech with kids?

Marrakech

I would say that the ideal time to visit Marrakech with your family is to spend at least 3/4 days there, the time to discover the city and try out some activities or do at least one excursion in the surrounding area! You can even spend 1 week in Marrakech with your family because the surrounding area is very rich, you won’t be bored!

Where to eat in Marrakech with kids: good addresses

La famille Marrakech
La famille

Here are some good places to eat in Marrakech with kids :

  • L’mida: a favorite spot in Marrakech. It must be said that the rooftop is stunning and the food is delicious!
  • Dar Dar: Another very trendy restaurant. The setting is sublime and the atmosphere very friendly! The rooftop is the place to be to watch the sunset.
  • La famille : my favorite place in Marrakech. A few tables hidden in a pretty garden. Everything is beautiful and delicious! The cuisine is vegetarian and original. There’s a small adjoining shop where you can buy some tableware or decor… it’s hard to leave empty-handed.

Final tips for visiting Marrakech with children

  • Drink only bottled water. Avoid ice cubes in drinks you buy at bars and restaurants. Avoid raw fruits and vegetables.
  • Bring a good first aid kit.
  • Bring a scarf to cover your shoulders if they are bare.
  • Don’t follow strangers who approach you in the medina, offering to show you the way, for example. You’ll risk nothing more than wasting your time and a few euros, but it’s still a bit much! Refuse politely but firmly.
  • Public restrooms are basic. You won’t find many places to change your children, so when you do (museums, restaurants), take advantage of them!
  • You can easily find diapers and baby food in local stores.
