UAE Road Trip Itinerary, practical advice

One of the great tricks of planning a road trip across the UAE is realizing just how close everything is. You can technically cross all 7 Emirates in a single day, but let’s not do anything so chaotic unless you enjoy seeing a country entirely through your windshield. I would set aside at least one week, and ideally two, for this itinerary, with at least 2 days in Dubai and 2 days in Abu Dhabi. The other stops can usually be explored more quickly. I also strongly recommend renting a car at the airport in Dubai or Abu Dhabi, then returning it before your flight home. It is by far the easiest way to do this trip properly. The best season for a UAE road trip is from October to March. Outside that window, it gets seriously hot, though an air-conditioned car makes it manageable. Just note that in January and February, evenings can feel surprisingly chilly, and mountain areas are cooler still.

If you have extra time, I really recommend adding the Musandam Peninsula, an Omani enclave in the far north that is actually easier to reach from the Emirates than from much of Oman itself. It is a fantastic detour, but do remember that you will be crossing a border, so you need special insurance from your car rental company if you want to drive there legally.

1. Dubai

 UAE Road Trip Itinerary Dubai

Dubai is the city of scale, spectacle, and endless reinvention. It is one of those places you should probably see at least once in your life, and yet somehow it also manages to tempt you back again and again. This is not a museum city frozen in time. It is a city that seems to wake up every morning with a new tower, a new beach club, a new restaurant, or a new way to make the skyline look even more dramatic. In other words, boredom does not really stand a chance here. 2. Abu Dhabi

 UAE Road Trip Itineraryabu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi is the capital of the United Arab Emirates, and it feels every bit the part: polished, spacious, modern, and quietly confident. It may be less flashy than Dubai, but that is not a weakness. In fact, it is exactly what makes it interesting. There is plenty to see, especially if you enjoy the cultural side of a city. The standout for many visitors is the Louvre Abu Dhabi, a striking museum that is absolutely worth your time. Then there is the magnificent Sheikh Zayed Mosque, the largest in the Emirates, all white marble and semi-precious stone inlay, with a grandeur that genuinely stops you in your tracks.

Also do not skip Qasr Al Watan, the presidential palace that only opened to the public a few years ago. It is one of those places that makes you mutter “well, that’s not exactly subtle” while taking 400 photos. A walk along the Corniche is another must, especially if you want a peek at the famously luxurious Emirates Palace. For more history, visit Qasr Al Hosn in the city center, and the Emirates Heritage Village, which gives a glimpse of life in the UAE before oil transformed everything.

Then there is Yas Island, home to the Yas Marina Circuit where the Formula 1 Grand Prix takes place, as well as beaches and some of the UAE’s best theme parks. Ferrari World Abu Dhabi and Warner Bros World Abu Dhabi are absolutely worth considering, whether you are traveling with kids or simply refusing to age gracefully.

3. Al Ain

UAE Road Trip Itinerary Al Ain

Al Ain feels like a different side of the UAE altogether—greener, calmer, and far more rooted in oasis life than most first-time visitors expect. Set in the desert but fed by natural springs, it is known for its vast palm groves and for being the birthplace of Sheikh Zayed, the founding father of the nation. The Al Ain Oasis is the obvious place to begin: shady, peaceful, and UNESCO-listed, with more than 150,000 trees across around 100 varieties. It is one of the loveliest walks in the UAE, especially when the desert heat is doing its usual dramatic performance.

For history, I recommend the Al Ain Palace Museum, once Sheikh Zayed’s residence, as well as Al Jahili Fort, built in 1890 and later recognized with the Terra Award in 2016 for earthen architecture. Qasr Al Muwaiji is another worthwhile stop, not least because you can visit the childhood home of Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

And for the best views in Al Ain, head up to Jebel Hafeet, rising to 1,240 meters. Sunrise and sunset up here are both worth the drive.

4. Hatta

 UAE Road Trip Itinerary Hatta

Hatta is the weekend escape many Dubai residents dream about when the city starts feeling too glossy and crowded. This mountain enclave of the emirate of Dubai sits deep in the Al Hajar Mountains, and the scenery alone makes the detour worthwhile. The most popular activity here is kayaking on Hatta Lake, a turquoise reservoir surrounded by rugged peaks. The view is absurdly pretty. You cannot swim here, but honestly, paddling through the landscape is the whole point.

Back in town, the Hatta Heritage Village is worth a stop for its restored fort, displays of local artifacts, and traditional clothing. Do climb the defense tower dating from 1880—the views are excellent, especially around sunset, when the mountains start putting on a bit of a show.

5. Fujairah

 UAE Road Trip Itinerary Fujairah
@fujairah_city

Fujairah, on the east coast, is where the UAE road trip finally leans into sea views and salt air. It is one of the best places in the country for diving and snorkeling, especially if spotting turtles sounds like your kind of holiday victory. I recommend Al Boom Diving if you want to organize a proper dive. Some people do it as a day trip from Dubai by leaving painfully early, but staying locally makes far more sense. The Le Meridien Al Aqah is a convenient base if you want beach time and extra water activities in one go.

In Fujairah city, visit the Fujairah Fort, which dates back to the 16th century and has free entry. Right nearby, the Fujairah Museum is also worth your time. The ticket is inexpensive, and the collection includes both archaeological finds from the region and an ethnographic section that adds useful context to everything you have been seeing on the road.

6. Sharjah

 UAE Road Trip Itinerary Sharjah

Sharjah is the UAE’s cultural heavyweight. UNESCO named it the Cultural Capital of the Arab World in 1998, and later the Capital of Islamic Culture in 2014, which is a fairly strong hint that you should not skip it. It is one of the best emirates for museums and historical sites, and some of the country’s most rewarding cultural stops are here. The Museum of Islamic Civilization is especially impressive—large, informative, and filled with beautiful objects. The Sharjah Art Museum is another excellent stop, and the fact that it is free certainly does not hurt.

The Sharjah Heritage Area is also well worth exploring, especially if you buy the combo ticket to visit several sites. Sharjah Fort, originally dating to 1823, has been beautifully restored. The Heritage Museum is a great place to learn more about local traditions, while Bait Al Naboodah offers a fascinating look at traditional Emirati architecture. Nearby, the Sharjah Art Foundation regularly shows rotating exhibitions, and the small Calligraphy Museum is included too.

Also worth seeing is the stunning Al Noor Mosque, even if you only admire it from the outside, and Al Noor Island, which mixes a butterfly house, modern art, a book pavilion, a cafe, and a playground into one pleasantly odd little package.

TIP: Be aware that Sharjah is the most conservative emirate. There is no alcohol, and it is wise to dress more modestly here—think covered shoulders, longer hemlines, and leave the tiny shorts for somewhere else.

7. Ras Al Khaimah

UAE Road Trip Itinerary Ras Al Khaimah

Ras Al Khaimah is where the UAE starts flexing its wilder side a little. This emirate stretches between the sea and the mountains and is home to the highest peaks in the country. In the city, I recommend the Ras Al Khaimah National Museum, housed inside a 19th-century fort that once served as the residence of the Qawassim rulers. It has a mix of archaeological and ethnographic displays that help fill in the story of the emirate.

Dhayah Fort, about 18 kilometers north of the city, is another must. It dates back to the 19th century and sits on a hilltop with superb views across mountains, sea, and date palm plantations. Yes, you do have to climb a fair number of steps to reach it, but the sunset up there makes the effort feel much less like an insult.

8. Jebel Jais

UAE Road Trip Itinerary Jebel Jais

Jebel Jais (Jabal Bil Ays) belongs to the emirate of Ras Al Khaimah and is the highest point in the United Arab Emirates, reaching 1,934 meters. The drive up is part of the experience: a long, winding mountain road threading through canyons and barren slopes, with dramatic views almost the entire way. The scenery is raw and stark rather than lush, and it can get surprisingly cold at the top. In winter, it may even snow occasionally. When I went, it was raining, which felt deeply rude but also memorable. Bring a warm jacket, especially if you are visiting in the cooler months. The road from RAK city to the summit is about 50 kilometers.

If you want an adrenaline detour, try Jais Flight, the longest zip line in the world. You can fly across the mountains at speeds up to 160 km/h over a 2.83-kilometer route, with canyons and peaks dropping dramatically below you. It is three minutes of full-on chaos, in the best way.

There are also several hiking opportunities nearby. One hike I enjoyed was in Wadi Shawka. There are roughly 650 to 700 steps to reach the top, so it is beginner-friendly in the sense that you do not need technical skills—just functioning legs and a slightly cooperative attitude. You can also camp overnight, and there is even a BBQ area if you want to go full mountain-picnic mode.

9. Umm Al Quwain

UAE Road Trip Itinerary Umm Al Quwain
@geotourservice

Umm Al Quwain is the UAE’s laid-back overachiever in doing very little, very well. It is the least developed and most relaxed emirate, which means you do not come here for blockbuster attractions—you come for a slower pace, some beach time, and a breather from the busier parts of the country. The best-known spot is Kite Beach, but there is also a beach lined with mangroves where you can join a kayak tour. If you want a bit of culture with your sea breeze, the Umm Al Quwain Museum, set inside a restored 1768 fort, displays archaeological remains and ethnographic objects from the emirates.

10. Ajman

 UAE Road Trip Itinerary Ajman

Ajman, the smallest of the seven emirates, often gets overlooked, which is slightly unfair because it is easy, welcoming, and much more than just a beach add-on. Hospitality runs deep here, and beyond the clear shoreline you will find plenty of activities and some genuinely good places to eat. It may not shout the loudest, but it is a pleasant stop on a UAE road trip and an easy place to slow down for a moment.
