Sümela Monastery, on the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List, is a top attraction in Trabzon. Known locally as the Monastery of the Virgin Mary, the historic site is located within the borders of Altındere Village in the Maçka district. Located within the Altındere Valley National Park, Sümela Monastery is 42 kilometers from the city center and 19 kilometers from the town center.

The Greek Orthodox monastery and church complex, located 1,150 meters above sea level, can be visited every day of the week between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Museum Card holders can enter the Sumela Monastery free of charge, but those without a card are charged 450 TL.

Formerly the Hagios Evgenios Church, the building now serves as the Yeni Cuma Mosque. Dedicated to Eugenios, the savior and patron saint of Trabzon, the exact date of its construction is unknown.

When Trabzon was conquered by the Ottoman Empire in 1461, Mehmet II performed his first prayer here, and for this reason, the religious structure was named Yeni Cuma (New Friday). Converted into a mosque by adding a minaret, the historic building stands out with its stonework and hand-carved decorations.

Kadırga Plateau, located on the Zigana Mountains, is located on the eastern side of the Zigana Pass. Known as Eskala in Greek, Kadırga Plateau is located within the Kürtün district of Gümüşhane. Located 24 kilometers from Tonya, Trabzon, the Kadırga Plateau Festival is held on the third Friday of July. At an altitude of 2,300 meters, the Kadırga Plateau features folk dance performances and competitions during the festival.

42) Stallion Lake

Located between Trabzon and Bayburt, Lake Aygır is located in the “Seven Lakes” region of the Haldizen Mountains. At an altitude of approximately 2,740 meters, Lake Aygır is a crater lake nestled within the mountains. With its blend of blue and green, Lake Aygır is considered one of Trabzon’s natural wonders.

43) Sera Lake and Sera Lake Nature Park

Sera Lake, located in the Akçaabat district of Trabzon province, is a landslide dam lake. Formed in the Derecik Valley between the Yıldızlı and Derecik municipalities, Sera Lake is located 12 kilometers from the city center and 4 kilometers from the district center.

Canoe tours are available at Sera Lake Nature Park, one of Trabzon’s natural wonders. Declared a nature park in 2010, Sera Lake offers opportunities for hiking, camping, recreational fishing, picnicking, and nature photography.

44) Asmasu Waterfall

Asmasu Waterfall, also known as Aytaş Asmasu Waterfall, is located within the Araklı district of Trabzon. At an altitude of 1,221 meters, Asmasu Waterfall is 44 kilometers from the town center. Nestled within a dense forest, Asmasu Waterfall’s waters cascade from a height of 120 meters, offering visitors a magnificent view.

45) Caykara

Çaykara, home to Uzungöl (Long Lake), which we mentioned at the beginning of this article, is located 76 kilometers from Trabzon’s city center. Situated 280 meters above sea level and 25 kilometers inland, Çaykara is a significant tourist destination in Trabzon. Among the places to visit in Çaykara, Limonsuyu Plateau, Şekersu Plateau, Sultan Murat Plateau, and Görnek Nature Park stand out.

46) Ortahisar

Ortahisar

Excavations in Ortahisar, Trabzon’s most populous district, have unearthed wicker columns and city walls dating back to the reign of Roman Emperor Hadrian. Byzantine-era moat walls, thought to have been built in 1460, have also been discovered. The Ortahisar excavation site is planned to be converted into an open-air museum and opened to tourism over time. Among the places to visit in Ortahisar are the Trabzon Botanical Park, İskender Paşa Mosque, Fatih Mosque, and Taşkın Museum.
