Best Day Trips From Marrakech
Marrakech is unforgettable, but it is also a lot. The souks, rooftops, scooters, spices, courtyards, and constant movement can be thrilling — and then suddenly you need mountains, sea air, waterfalls, or a bit of desert silence before your brain turns into mint tea.
That is where these day trips from Marrakech come in. Some are easy half-day escapes. Some are long but worth it. A few are technically possible in one day, although we would absolutely stay overnight if time allowed. Choose based on your energy, not just what looks close on the map.
1. Ouarzazate

| 📍 193 kilometers | Click for location 🚗 By car: 3 hours and 45 minutes 📷 Must-see/do: Cross the Atlas Mountains, visit Atlas Studios, explore the souks |
Ouarzazate is one of the most famous day trips from Marrakech, but it is a long one. The drive is part of the experience, taking you through the High Atlas Mountains, past winding roads, ochre villages, and wide mountain views.
The city is often called the gateway to the desert, and it is also a big stop for film lovers. Atlas Studios has been used for major productions including Gladiator, The Mummy, Asterix & Obelix: Mission Cleopatra, and scenes linked to Game of Thrones.
After visiting the studios, leave time for the souks and local streets. Ouarzazate is calmer than Marrakech, but it still has that Moroccan mix of earth-toned architecture, craft shops, spices, and desert-edge atmosphere.

Booking tip: If you do not want to drive the mountain roads yourself, a guided Ouarzazate day trip is the easiest option. Look for tours that include hotel pickup, time at Atlas Studios, and enough stops on the way so the day does not feel like one long car seat marathon.

2. Essaouira

| 📍 185 kilometers | Click for location 🚗 By car: 2 hours and 47 minutes 📷 Must-see/do: Walk through the medina, explore the ramparts, visit women’s argan oil cooperatives |
Essaouira is the day trip for sea air. If Marrakech starts to feel too hot, too loud, or too packed, this breezy Atlantic city is the reset button. It has a calm medina, whitewashed streets, blue doors, ramparts, fishing boats, and a much slower pace.
Spend your day wandering the medina, walking along the ramparts, watching the harbor, and eating fresh seafood if that is your thing. It is still lively, but in a softer, saltier, wind-in-your-hair kind of way.
On the road between Marrakech and Essaouira, many tours also stop at women’s argan oil cooperatives. It is a practical stop if you want to learn about argan oil production or buy some, but compare quality and prices before filling half your suitcase.

Booking tip: Essaouira is one of the easiest guided day trips from Marrakech because the route is straightforward and you get several hours to explore independently.

3. Berber Villages: Imlil and Ouirgane

| 📍 100 kilometers | Click for location 🚗 By car: 2 hours and 15 minutes 📷 Must-see/do: Hiking, mountain views, and traditional Berber culture |
The Berber villages of the Atlas Mountains are a beautiful reset from Marrakech. Imlil and Ouirgane offer mountain scenery, quiet roads, fresh air, and a slower look at rural life outside the city.
Imlil is especially popular because it is a gateway to Mount Toubkal, the highest peak in North Africa. You do not need to climb Toubkal to enjoy the area. Even a short walk gives you terraces, stone houses, valleys, and big mountain views.
Ouirgane is softer and quieter, better if you want a peaceful mountain day rather than a trekking-focused trip. Go for the scenery, a local lunch, and the feeling that Marrakech has finally stopped shouting.

Booking tip: A guided Atlas Mountains day trip is worth it if you want village context, a planned walking route, and a local lunch without dealing with transport yourself.

4. Ouzoud Waterfalls

| 📍 160 kilometers | Click for location 🚗 By car: 2 hours and 15 minutes 🚌 By bus: 4 hours to Azilal, then take a taxi to the falls 📷 Must-see/do: Hike, swim, take a boat ride, browse local craft stalls |
Ouzoud Waterfalls are one of the best nature day trips from Marrakech. The falls drop about 110 meters, surrounded by greenery, cliffs, walking paths, and natural pools.
This is a good choice if you want a proper outdoor day rather than another town or village. You can hike down toward the base, take a small boat close to the spray, swim when conditions allow, or simply sit with a view and enjoy the cooler air.
You may also see Barbary macaques along the paths. They are fun to spot, but keep your food packed away and do not encourage close contact. Cute, yes. Professional snack thieves, also yes.

Booking tip: Ouzoud is much easier with an organized tour because public transport is slow and you still need onward transport from Azilal.

5. Aït Oucheg Valley

| 📍 70 kilometers | Click for location 🚗 By car: 1 hour and 40 minutes 📷 Must-see/do: Trekking, mountain scenery, and paragliding |
Aït Oucheg Valley is a quieter alternative to Ourika. It has mountain paths, streams, small villages, and a more off-the-beaten-track feel than the better-known valley routes.
This is a lovely option for walkers and photographers. The scenery changes as you move through the valley, with green patches, rocky slopes, and villages tucked into the landscape.
If you go trekking, consider hiring a local guide. The routes are more enjoyable when someone can explain the villages, paths, and landscape instead of you pretending your phone map is a mountain expert.
Booking tip: This is a better trip to do with a private driver or guide rather than a generic large-group tour. Ask in advance how much walking is included and whether lunch is arranged locally.
6. Kik Plateau

| 📍 70 kilometers | Click for location 🚗 By car: 1 hour and 30 minutes 📷 Must-see/do: Hiking, mountain views, and paragliding |
The Kik Plateau is one of the best scenic day trips from Marrakech. It sits above Asni and gives you wide views of the High Atlas Mountains, especially on clear days when the peaks are still snowy.
The area is home to Berber farming communities, small roads, fields, limestone formations, and seasonal color. It is a good destination for gentle hiking, photography, and slow scenic drives.
Some travelers also come here for paragliding. If that is your plan, book with a reputable operator and check the weather carefully. Mountain wind has opinions.

7. Rock Engravings of Oukaimeden

| 📍 75 kilometers | Click for location 🚗 By car: 1 hour and 30 minutes 📷 Must-see/do: Hiking, winter sports, and ancient rock carvings |
Oukaïmeden is best known as Morocco’s main ski resort, sitting high in the Atlas Mountains. In winter, it draws visitors for snow and ski lifts. In warmer months, it becomes a good destination for hiking, cool mountain air, and big open views.
The area is also known for ancient rock engravings, which add a completely different layer to the trip. You come for the mountain scenery, then suddenly you are looking at traces of much older human history carved into stone.
This is a good day trip if you want something cooler, higher, and less obvious than the standard valley route.

Booking tip: Oukaïmeden is best with a guide especially if you want to find the rock engravings without wasting time.
We picked this tour, and it was great- fantastic views, a nice walk & good food :
8. Zat Valley and Tighedouine Village

| 📍 60 kilometers | Click for location 🚗 By car: 1 hour and 15 minutes 📷 Must-see/do: Hiking, village walks, and the local souk in Tighedouine |
The Zat Valley is a quieter, less obvious day trip from Marrakech. It is close enough for an easy escape, but it feels much more rural once you reach the villages and mountain roads.
Tighedouine is the main village to know here. The traditional souk is a good place to see local life in motion, and the surrounding area has walking routes, springs, and views across the valley.
This is not the most polished tourist day trip, and that is part of its charm. Come with a guide or a good driver, give yourself time, and do not expect everything to run like a packaged attraction.
9. Agafay Desert

| 📍 30 kilometers | Click for location 🚗 By car: 1 hour 📷 Must-see/do: Camel rides, quad biking, desert walks, sunset dinners, and overnight camps |
A trip to the Agafay Desert is one of the easiest ways to get a desert-style experience from Marrakech without driving all the way to the Sahara.
Agafay is not a sand-dune desert. It is rocky, pale, open, and surprisingly peaceful, with views toward the Atlas Mountains on clear days. That makes it ideal for travelers who want desert atmosphere but are short on time.
You can visit for a few hours, book a camel ride or quad bike tour, have lunch at a desert camp, or stay for sunset dinner. If you have the time, staying overnight is even better. The desert is lovely by day, but much more memorable once the light softens and the day-trippers leave.

Booking tip: Agafay is where booking ahead really helps. The best sunset dinners, quad tours, and desert camp experiences can fill up, especially in high season.

10. Ourika Valley

| 📍 60 kilometers | Click for location 🚗 By car: 1 hour 📷 Must-see/do: Hiking, waterfalls, riverside restaurants, and Berber villages |
Ourika Valley is one of the easiest and most popular day trips from Marrakech. It is green, scenic, and close, which makes it especially tempting when the city heat starts getting bossy.
The valley is dotted with Berber villages, riverside cafés, mountain roads, and walking routes. Many visitors come for the Setti Fatma waterfalls, but even if you do not hike all the way up, the drive and scenery are still worth it.
Because Ourika is so popular, it can feel busy on weekends and holidays. Go early if you want a calmer experience, and wear shoes with grip if you plan to walk near the waterfalls.

This is the best Ourika Valley tour, really great experience. Excellent views. Nice food. Great host and driver.
11. Lalla Takerkoust and its Lake

| 📍 40 kilometers | Click for location 🚗 By car: 45 minutes 🚌 By bus: From Sidi Mimoum station 📷 Must-see/do: Lakeside lunch, swimming, hiking, quad biking, buggy rides |
Lalla Takerkoust is a peaceful lake escape close to Marrakech. It works well when you want water, mountain views, and a slower day without a long drive.
You can come for lunch by the lake, a swim when conditions allow, a walk, or a more active outing with quad biking or buggy rides around the area. It is also easy to combine with the Kik Plateau or Agafay Desert if you want a fuller day trip.
This is one of those places that does not need a complicated itinerary. Arrive, find a good view, eat something, and let the lake do the heavy lifting.
12. Jbilets Desert

| 📍 30 kilometers | Click for location 🚗 By car: 30 minutes 📷 Must-see/do: Camel rides, quad biking, buggy rides, and hot air balloon rides |
The Jebilet Desert sits just north of Marrakech and is a good option if you want rocky desert scenery without going far. It is less famous than Agafay, but it offers a similar dry, lunar landscape with the Atlas Mountains often visible in the distance.
This area is popular for quad biking, buggy rides, camel rides, and sunrise hot air balloon experiences. It is a practical choice if you want a short adventure rather than a full-day journey.
If your schedule is tight, Jbilets is one of the quickest ways to swap the medina for open desert views.
Booking tip: Jbilets is ideal for a short adventure tour from Marrakech.

13. Agadir

| 📍 250 kilometers | Click for location 🚗 By car: 3 hours 📷 Must-see/do: Beaches, water sports, marina, and the Kasbah of Agadir |
Agadir is possible as a long day trip from Marrakech, but it is better if you want a full beach day and do not mind the drive. The reward is the Atlantic coast: wide sandy beaches, sea air, and a very different feeling from inland Morocco.
The city has nearly 10 kilometers of beach, plus water sports, cafés, a marina, and a relaxed resort atmosphere. It is not as historic or atmospheric as Essaouira, but it works well if your main goal is sun, sea, and space.
Do not miss the Kasbah of Agadir for panoramic views over the city and bay. If you have more time, Agadir is better as a one- or two-night coastal break rather than a rushed day trip.

We took this trip from Marrakech for €31 and was an absolute thrill:
14. Zagora

| 📍 250 kilometers | Click for location 🚗 By car: 6-7 hours 📷 Must-see/do: Draa Valley, desert camps, camel rides, and Saharan culture |
Zagora is often sold as a day trip from Marrakech, but let’s be realistic: this is a very long drive. It is much better as an overnight or two-day trip if you want to enjoy it instead of spending the whole day folded into a vehicle.
That said, Zagora is a good choice if you want to get closer to the Sahara without going all the way to Merzouga. The route takes you through the High Atlas Mountains and the Draa Valley, with palm groves, kasbahs, and desert-edge scenery along the way.
Once there, you can take a camel ride, stay in a desert camp, and experience a quieter Saharan atmosphere. Just do yourself a favor: if Zagora is high on your list, give it more than one rushed day.

Booking tip: Avoid booking Zagora as a same-day return unless you truly love sitting in a car. A 2-day tour with a desert camp overnight is much better value for the experience and gives you time to enjoy the Draa Valley, sunset, and the desert atmosphere properly. You can check it out below.
